THE RARE APPLE TREE
by Arvil Lee
In the early 1930's my dad moved the family to a place on the Falling Water River. There was a big spring branch that emptied into the river just above where our house sat. On the bank of the spring branch was a big apple tree. When the apples were ripe the peeling had a green color like the Granny Smith with little dark spots scattered all over the apple. The flavor was delicious. I never saw another tree like it for many years, until we bought the house where we live now. On the day of the sale I walked out to an apple tree that was standing in the back yard, picked up an apple and took a bite and to my surprise it was like the one I had eaten by the branch beside the river when I was a kid.
THOUGHTS ABOUT COWS
by Arvil Lee
There are many things that I remember happening when I was a kid--things that adults perhaps didn't even notice. Such as, why some cows were red, others black, some white, but all of them gave white milk. I thought "How can a black cow eat green grass, give white milk and make yellow butter?" I've never been too smart anyway.
